Why was ETIAS introduced?

ETIAS has been introduced as a security measure. On 2016, President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker said, “We need to know who is crossing our borders. This way we will know who is travelling to Europe before they even get here.”

The main purpose of the ETIAS is security. Through the system, ETIAS would detect if an individual could be a threat or pose any danger to the region and its people.

It has also been discussed that the ETIAS would contribute as follows:

  • Reduced procedures and application times
  • Improve the management of EU country borders
  • Contribute to identifying crime and terrorism
  • Decreasing crime and terrorism
  • Interfere with irregular migration
  • Reinforce the visa liberalization policy of the EU
