Why was ETIAS introduced?

ETIAS has been introduced primarily as a security measure. In 2016, President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker said, “We need to know who is crossing our borders. This way we will know who is travelling to Europe before they even get here.”

Through the system, ETIAS would detect if an individual could be a threat or pose any danger to the region and its people. The EU also intends for ETIAS to enhance its capacity to:

  • Reduce procedures and application times
  • Improve the management of EU Schengen borders
  • Contribute to identifying crime and terrorism
  • Decrease crime and terrorism
  • Prevent irregular migration
  • Reinforce the visa liberalization policy of the EU
